In this step-by-step DIY, I will show you how to make a bent-over Grinchmas tree using fresh-cut greenery and wire. This fun and unique tree promises to be a conversation starter, bringing a playful and festive spirit to your home.
I love to include Grinch trees in my holiday decorations each year. This festive tree always brings a smile to whoever comes over during the holiday season, instantly making them think of Dr. Seuss, The Grinch Stole Christmas, and Cindy Lou! This themed Christmas tree, especially the tabletop version, makes a great gift idea.
These Christmas trees are fun to leave simple or to bust out your wildest Christmas decorations and go totally Grinch-style wild! Before you jump into making your Whoville Christmas tree, there are a few things to consider.
What Is A Grinchmas Tree
“Grinchmas Tree” typically refers to a Christmas tree inspired by the fictional character the Grinch, created by Dr. Seuss. The Grinch is a green, furry creature known for disliking Christmas and attempts to steal the holiday joy from the residents of Whoville in the classic Dr. Seuss story “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”
A Grinchmas Tree is often decorated with a Grinch theme, featuring green decorations, Grinch ornaments, and possibly even a Grinch tree topper. The color scheme is usually focused on the Grinch’s signature green color, and you may find elements that reflect the whimsical and mischievous nature of the character.
Variations of Grinchmas Trees
There are a few different types of Grinchmas trees you can make. No matter your size or style, the tree’s base structure will always be the same. So keep it simple or go all out, GRINCH; whichever way you decorate it, just have FUN!
Scandinavian Grinchmas Tree –
Scandinavian Christmas decor has gained popularity in recent years, and this is the style of tree I will show you in this post. This tree style can be made using one type of greenery, or you can try mixing and matching different types of evergreen to add texture.
This style can be made as a large planter or in a small pot for a tabletop minimal Christmas tree and can be finished with or without decorations. I love to add a few twinkle lights and a clay ornament or antique mercury Christmas ball as the tree topper.
Natural Grinchmas Tree
A natural Grinchmas tree uses natural elements as the decorations. Wrap the tree in homemade popcorn or cranberry garland and top it off with a beautiful frosted pinecone or a dried orange slice ornament.
Decorating your Grinchmas tree this way will add a unique earthy vibe to this playful style of tree.
Grinchiest Grinchmas Tree
This is the most traditional style of Grinchmas tree and, of course, the most popular too! This is your opportunity to go ALL out with the decorations and have some fun!
Try wrapping your tree in a colorful candy cane ribbon and multicolored twinkle lights. Then, add a few brightly colored ornaments for another pop of color! The key to decorating this way is to go all out with oversized and smaller ornaments and colorful decorations!
Best Greenery To Use
Spruce
Spruce is an excellent option to use when making Grinchmas trees. It is easy to find and is a full-bodied evergreen that works well as it becomes quite sturdy. It is a great evergreen to mix with others because of its fullness.
The type of greenery you use for your Grinchmas tree will change its appearance completely. Depending on what is available in your area, there may be more or fewer options.
The downfalls are it can be quite hard on the hands, and some variations have a very muted green tone. All spruce will also shed its needles, so it can be a mess if you bring it into your home.
Fir
Fir, like spruce, is a beautiful evergreen as it is very sturdy and makes an excellent base for your Grinchmas tree. The green tone of fir is very bright and beautiful, and the needles of this variation do not shed, which makes it wonderful to have indoors. It is a softer needle, making it much kinder to your hands than spruce.
The only real downfall is that depending on where you live, it can be challenging to find.
The Grinchy tree shown here was made with Douglas Fir branches, and I love how they look like they are straight out of Whoville with the flocked snow on top of them!
Fir is probably my favorite evergreen to use to make Grinchmas trees.
Pine
Pine branches are usually thinner and shorter than spruce or fir, but this type of branch can give your Grinchmas tree a unique look. The green color is much lighter as well.
Pine is relatively easy to work with, but the long needles can be sharp on the hands.
Cedar
Cedar branches are a great option to use when making a Grinchmas tree. The branches are very soft to the touch, so you never have to worry about hurting your hands. The color is quite vibrant, and when the cedar dries out, it curls on the end, giving the tree an extra Grinchy look!
The only downsides are that it can sometimes be hard to find or forge unless it grows locally in your area, and cedar branches are quite thin, so you have to use a lot of branches to make your tree. I would suggest mixing cedar branches with other types of evergreen for a textured look to your Grinchmas tree.
How To Make A Grinchmas Tree
Now that you have all the details to decide what type and size of Grinch tree you want to make let’s get crafting!

- Fresh-cut greenery (a variety of greenery works well)
- A study wood pole or branch
- Base or Bucket
- Bricks, Gravel, Sand or Styrofoam
- Wire ( 28 gauge floral wire or garden wire)
- Wire cutters
- Garden gloves
- Twinkle lights
- Ornaments and decorations (optional)
- Ribbon or garland (optional)
- Tree topper (optional)
Instructions
- Begin by gathering your fresh-cut greenery. Head outdoors or visit a local tree farm to collect the desired amount and variations.
- Secure the trunk by placing the large wooden pole or branch into your base and securing it with gravel, bricks, or styrofoam. This will act as your Grinch tree trunk.
- Next, shape the base by gathering a selection of solid branches together and arranging them around the base with the base of the branches facing up. This will be the foundation of your whimsical creation, so make sure it is sturdy and strong.
- Secure the branches in position using wire. Wrap the wire tightly around the base, ensuring stability. Trim excess wire with wire cutters.
- Now begin layering and shaping the Grinchmas tree. Add a layer of additional branches, securing each layer with wire as you go. Continue shaping the tree, adjusting the branches to achieve the desired whimsical appearance and size.
- Once you are happy with the size and shape, finish the top of the tree by tightly wrapping the remaining branches with wire until the end becomes very thin. Then, bend the top over, giving the effect of a bent-over or bendable Christmas tree.
- Now that the basic structure is in place, it’s time to add the Grinchmas charm! Decorate your bent-over tree with your favorite ornaments and Christmas tree decorations, creating a playful and unique holiday display. Or, like I have done here, simply add a few twinkle lights and leave the tree looking minimal.
- Complete your bent-over Grinchmas tree with a tree topper of your choice. A whimsical star or Grinch-themed decoration would add the perfect finishing touch and Christmas cheer.
